Area B
A live barrier prevents erosion and gulleys

As seen in the photo, Area B has been terraced to prevent soil erosion. This was done by encouraging natural grasses to grow along the contour. This is a traditional system, possibly dating back to the Taino Indians, where traditional crops such as cassava and maize are grown in association with high value forest species. Once the trees have reached sufficient size, the farmer encourages the growth of shade tolerant species in the forest understory. Eventually, the trees will be harvested and sold on the market for wood.
