Blips

There have been some blips in the blogosphere regarding the Open Source AT discussion. Jeff’s ruminations at sustainablog are featured on this week’s Carnival of the Green.

Jamais Cascio at World Changing has written an excellent and thought provoking entry about Open Source AT. Cascio points out that interface and usability will be key to ensuring wide-spread use of open source technologies, just as it has been with proprietary systems. I will post a response to this article shortly.

Seven Generational Ruminations has chimed in on the issue, noting that open source projects tend to attract people who are motivated by the nature of the problem, which “really does…contribute to the overall increase in knowledge among society as a whole.”

Within the context of this discussion, the Appleseed Biodiesel processor has emerged as an example of open source applied to AT. Thanks to the folks at How to Save the World for Free on that one.

During the next two weeks, I will be building a hydraulic ram pump, an appropriate technology that has met with much success but little fan-fare. Stay tuned for details and photos.
