Americans, if you care about your country then there is one single thing you can do to make it better: support and vote for third parties. Every two years we go to the polls and choose between two parties whose differences have grown unbelievably narrow and whose vitriolic polemics serve only one purpose: to vilify the other and create an illusion of choice.
Republicans and Democrats alike know that they desperately need one another to retain power. And the one thing they both fear and suppress is the emergence of electable third party candidates. George Farah, in his book No Debate, elucidates the bi-partisan conquest of the Commission on Presidential Debates and the subsequent exclusion of third party candidates from the political dialog.
A two-party oligarchy is a stone’s throw away from being politically identical to the professed mortal enemies, both historical and current, of the United States: Iraq under Hussein, the Soviet Union, Maoist China, North Korea, Cuba…and the list goes on.
Fortunately, we still live in a country with a strong democratic tradition and the legal and social mechanisms for reform. Support third parties, create new ones, vote for them, donate money. This is the single most important thing a concerned citizen can do to revitalize American democracy.
